This article is part of the Realization Series , a collection of reflections meant to help us look at life more deeply and honestly. The purpose of this series is not merely to give information, but to help us understand our present condition and move toward truth with clarity. In daily life, we often compare ourselves with others and wonder why different people face different kinds of struggles. Through the Realization Series, we try to see such questions from a deeper lens. This article explains that human struggle can be understood through three domains: physical, mental, and spiritual. Each person suffers and grows according to the domain they are currently living in. Real growth begins when we stop imagining where we should be and honestly recognize where we are. Only then can we take the right kind of effort. That is the spirit of the Realization Series: clarity, honesty, and movement toward ultimate truth.

We often see some people doing intense physical labour, while others sit in comfortable rooms and do very little physical work. This raises a simple question: why do some people go through more hardship than others?

A simple way to understand this is through three domains of life :

  • physical ,
  • mental , and
  • spiritual .

Each person struggles mainly in one of these domains, depending on their present state of life.

1. The Physical Domain

A person in the physical domain struggles with basic discipline in life. They may find it hard to maintain a proper schedule, control their habits, or manage their emotions and reactions.

For such a person, words and advice alone often do not create much change. They need the lessons of physical effort and hardship. Physical work helps them become more grounded, disciplined, and stable.

That is why some people need physical labour and physical hardship in order to live well.

2. The Mental Domain

The second domain is the mental domain.

A person in this state may already be disciplined in many outward ways. They may follow a schedule, control their reactions, and behave properly. Even a small scolding may affect them deeply. They usually do not overreact outwardly, but inwardly their thoughts remain restless, random, and uncontrolled.

Many times, their own thoughts become the source of suffering.

Such a person needs mental effort . They need work that challenges the mind, sharpens thinking, and brings inner clarity. Their hardship is not mainly physical. It is mental.

That is why some people have to go through intense thinking, problem-solving, or mental pressure in order to live well.

3. The Spiritual Domain

The highest domain is the spiritual domain.

A person in this state sees that the real purpose of life is connection with the ultimate truth . For such a person, the real difficulty begins only when they become disconnected from that truth.

Their work is no longer mainly physical or mental. Their work is spiritual.

This spiritual effort may take the form of:

  • chanting the holy name of one’s Isht Dev
  • doing kirtan
  • listening to or speaking katha
  • remembering and serving the ultimate truth

Here, the struggle is spiritual. This effort is necessary for living well at that level.

Realization: Work in the Domain You Are Actually In

This is the most important point.

We should work in the domain we are currently in .

Not the domain we imagine ourselves to be in.

Not the domain we wish to be in.

Not the domain we were in earlier.

True growth begins when we honestly see where we are right now and do the work required at that level.

If we are in the physical domain, we need physical discipline.

If we are in the mental domain, we need mental discipline.

If we are in the spiritual domain, we need spiritual discipline .

Only then can we truly live well and move forward.
